CENGIZ HAKSÖZ BIO

I was born in Bulgaria. Then, in 1989, together with my family moved to Turkey. I finished my primary and secondary education in Istanbul. I have a B.A. degree in Political Science and International Relations at Marmara University, Istanbul (2003), and an M.S. degree in Sociology at Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey (2007). I spent a total two years as an Erasmus exchange student in Germany, at the Technical University of Chemnitz (2006-2007) and the University of Bielefeld (20180-2020). I am a Ph.D. candidate in Anthropology, at the University of Pittsburgh, and a Ph.D. candidate in Anthropology in Sociology at Middle East Technical University (METU), Ankara, Turkey. I taught courses at the University of Pittsburgh, USA, at Boğaziçi University, Istanbul, Turkey, and Yeni Yüzyıl Unversity, Istanbul, Turkey. My main geographical areas of interest are the Balkans, Eastern Europe, Turkey, and North America. My research interests lie in the sphere of food, collective memory, borderlands, identity, minorities, ethnicity, language, religion, nationalism, landscapes, urban studies, and energy. My dissertation research at the University of Pittsburgh focuses on the use of various landscapes in post-socialist peripheral cities in Bulgaria. Additionally, my dissertation at METU will study the double integration of immigrants from Bulgaria in Germany who have an ethnic-Turkish origin. I speak Turkish, English, and Bulgarian at an advanced level, as well as German at the intermediate level.
